I saw a neat thing yesterday. A very young man went out of his way to help a very old man learn how to use a computer. The young man was patient and respectful, and the old man accepted the guidance with grace and humor. If they were judged by their appearances, the young man might be assumed impudent and surly, and the old man resentful of having to adapt. But they weren't. When I see just smatterings of simple compassion, it reminds me of how great God's love is, prompting me to ask, what can I do today that will reflect Christ, no matter how small the act?

New school year resolutions

I have had a leisurely five days off. Next week is the beginning of the fall semester. Things are about to get crazy again. Here are my "new school year" resolutions:

1. Become better organized at work and at home (yeah, we'll see . . . )
2. Take more pumping breaks at work, even if it means telling students, "Um, excuse me; I have to go extract nourishment from my body and save it for my offspring so that she will get fewer ear infections."
3. Eat better.
4. Create meal plans for the week based on what is on sale at Publix.
5. Invest more into buying quality food at the grocery store so that we have it at the house and are not forced to buy takeout/fast food which is less healthy and more expensive. (I try to not spend too much at the store, but then the food runs out and we all end up hungry and angry and eating the least ethical option available.)
6. Stop starting stupid fights with my husband about food (do you see a trend here?)
7. Go to the gym at least once a week; when it gets cooler, jog/walk at least 3 times a week.
8. Pray more (this one really should be first).
